      Eye on Iraq: War Update
News and analysis about the present military action in Iraq.

Small Arms are Continuing Threat in Iraq
As bombs fall on Iraq, the threat of a chemical, biological or nuclear attack remains a real threat to U.S. and coalition forces. But, with the hope that there is no attack using weapons of mass destruction, the majority of U.S. casualties in this war will be from small arms and light weapons. Moreover, the real threat to the rebuilding of Iraq may be these weapons as well.

The Patriot: Its Performance So Far
One of the many technologies seeing battle for the first time in Operation Iraqi Freedom is the latest version of the Patriot missile defense system. This weapon uses a hit-to-kill warhead to intercept enemy missiles and is being lauded by some as a litmus test for the effectiveness of missile defense in general. CDI examines what has been reported of the Patriot to date and cautions against jumping to conclusions about its lethality.

The Pentagon Budget: More of the Same...Much, Much More.
When it comes to the defense budget, we do not actually get what we think we are buying. Since the September 11th attacks the annual defense budget has increased by roughly $60 billion, and will reach over one-half trillion dollars by the end of the decade. Yet despite these increases, the expected goals of higher military spending--preventing terrorism, safeguarding Americans against terrorist attacks, and creating a military best-suited to meet the challenges of the 21st century--will not be met. Instead, tens of billions of dollars will be wasted, as other critical needs go unmet. CDI Senior Analyst Christopher Hellman writes for Foreign Policy in Focus.
