Ulyanovsk Governor Initiates Lenin's Reburial In His
Native City
MOSCOW. Oct 10 (Interfax) - Ulyanovsk region Governor Sergey Morozov believes
the body of Vladimir Lenin should be transferred to his native city and he will
file a corresponding request with the federal government, says a report posted
on the governor's official website.
"To this day, for the majority of the residents and guests of our region,
Ulyanovsk remains Lenin's birthplace," Morozov said.
Meanwhile, representatives of several well-known human rights organizations
oppose the idea of Lenin's reburial.
"There are many elderly people in Russia for whom Lenin is a symbol. Since so
many people treat him as hold, it's better not to traumatize them," Lyudmila
Alexeyeva, head of the Moscow Helsinki Group, told Interfax on Monday.
Jan Raczinski, co-chairman of the Moscow-based Memorial society, fears that a
decision to rebury Lenin's body could split the nation.
"I am not sure this is a timely move. It will radicalize positions and bring
about an absolutely unproductive escalation of polemics," he told Interfax.
