MOST RUSSIANS COME OUT AGAINST UNVEILING STALIN MONUMENT

MOSCOW, May 5 (RIA Novosti) - About 53% of Russians come out against unveiling a monument to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, while 34% support this idea, according to a poll conducted by Yury Levada's Analytical Center.

54% of the respondents believe that a monument to all soldiers who fought against Nazism should be unveiled to mark the 60th anniversary of Victory over Nazi Germany, 38% think that this should be a monument to people killed during World War II in all countries and 4% of the polled spoke in favor of a monument to the leaders of the anti-Hitler coalition.

According to the poll, 26% of Russians consider May 9 an official holiday, 25% - a holiday of veterans, 27% - a people's holiday in Russia and the former Soviet Union, 27% - a holiday of all members of the anti-Hitler coalition and 12% - a worldwide holiday which should be marked even by enemies of the USSR (this opinion was backed by the invitation of the German and Japanese leaders to VE Day celebrations).

This nationwide representative poll of 1,600 Russians was conducted in late April in 128 settlements of 46 Russian regions. The statistic error does not exceed 3%.
