G8 concept familiar to most Russians - Poll
MOSCOW. June 5 (Interfax) - The phrase Group of Eight has become routine and
familiar to most Russians, and 70% of them have heard it, as is evident from a
poll of 1,500 respondents carried out by the Public Opinion Foundation in late
May.
About 78% of those aware consider Russia's membership in G8 important, while
another 5% have a different opinion.
In the view of 30% of Russians, the association with the leading countries
strengthens Russia's positions and improves its security as well. In addition,
10% believe membership in the G8 is "honorable," as this group unites the
strongest countries.
About 10% of those polled believe Russia's membership in the G8 leads to
closer and more fruitful cooperation with the leading countries in the most
important areas, such as combat against drug trafficking and terrorism and
exchange of know how, which should positively influence the economic situation
in Russia.
Only 4% of those polled attempted to explain why they believe Russia's
membership in the G8 is of little value. They reasoned that Russia is
self-sufficient, while the other G8 members do not treat it with proper respect.
In addition, they said G8 membership does not have any impact on Russia's
economy.
