Russia: Left-wing economist set to split Communist bloc
Source: Radio Mayak, Moscow, in Russian 1100 gmt 11 Aug 03

[Presenter] Patriotic forces of Russia may run in the election to the State
Duma [lower house of Russian parliament] as a single bloc. Such is the
initiative of Sergey Glazyev, chairman of the Congress of Russian Communities - an
all-Russia public organization. A dozen people's patriotic movements will receive
his offer to set up a coalition today: Communist Party of the Russian
Federation [CPRF], Russian Party of Labour, People's Patriotic Party of Russia, the
Great-Power Union of Russia headed by [Leonid] Ivashov among them. Glazyev
believes that such a coalition will help people's patriotic forces to get the
majority of voices in the new Duma.

[Glazyev] We need the majority. If we run on the Communist Party list, we
shall not get the majority. The parallel electoral associations which are part of
the patriotic forces' coalition could work in the constituencies where voters
are ready to give their votes to people's patriotic forces, but for various
reasons do not want to vote for the CPRF. I am sure that we need to set up a
coalition which will aim at a national programme reflecting national interests.
It is difficult for any party list to claim to express the national interest,
even if it is so in essence. That is why it makes sense for the CPRF to enter
the bloc in order to overcome the party's ceiling and to start forming a
national front of people's patriotic forces.

[Presenter] Glazyev said that if the CPRF refuses to enter the coalition, he
himself may have to head the bloc of electoral associations. As for being one
of the three leaders of the CPRF at the forthcoming election, Glazyev denied
that he had received such a proposal.
