Russian suicide figures exceed WHO critical threshold - expert
Interfax

Moscow, 11 August: Some 60,000 people commit suicide in Russia each year,
Tatyana Dmitriyeva, director of the Serbskiy National Research Centre for Social
and Forensic Psychiatry, said in an interview published by the Nezavisimaya
Gazeta newspaper today.

"The average [suicide] rate in Russia is 38 per 100,000 people, and 60 among
men. According to the World Health Organization, the critical figure is 20,"
Dmitriyeva said.

In Russia, suicide tendencies are observed among certain age, gender, ethnic
and social groups, she said.

"The incidence of suicide among men in Russia is six times higher than among
women. Women appear to be more resistant to stress, despite all the hardships
of women's lives," Dmitriyeva said.

Among adults, the 45 to 59 age group has the highest risk of suicide. "In
terms of the number of suicide cases, men are followed by teenagers," Dmitriyeva
said.
