Two thirds of Russians lost hopes of becoming wealthy - poll

MOSCOW. Aug 9 (Interfax) - Two thirds of Russians (68%) believe they will never have "lots of money." Just 18% of the respondents expect to be well-off, according to a poll conducted by the Public Opinion foundation among 1,500 Russians in early August.

People under 35 years old account for 41%, those who have higher education account for 24% and respondents living in large cities account for 24% of the group hoping to come into money.

Russians differ on the definition of a large income.

Some 12% of the respondents said 5,000 rubles was a lot of money. At least 24% referred to amounts between 5,000 and 10,000 rubles, 20% spoke about 10,000 to 25,000 rubles and 21% suggested 25,000 to 50,000 rubles.

More than half, 57%, said that none of their acquaintances had a lot of money or that nobody does. About 32% believe few people are rich while 6% acknowledged that many of their acquaintances were well-off.

Two thirds of those polled (68%) said they had little money and 29% believe they are neither rich nor poor. Just 1% of Russians admitted that they have plenty of money.
