::  Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his special
representative to Chechnya, Abdul-Khakim Sultygov, to discuss
the civil forum. Sultygov noted that Chechen residents should be
able to meet with presidential candidates at the forum.

::  President Putin also met with Deputy Prime Minister Viktor
Khristenko to discuss energy reform. Khristenko reported that a
resolution listing maximum tariffs on electricity will be prepared
by August 14.

::  Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov spoke in favor of a
prompt approval of a new resolution on Iraq by the UN Security
Council.

::  The Arbitration Court annulled the registration of the Gallup
trademark on Russian territory. Representatives of the US
company, Gallup Organization, stated that Finnish Suomen Gallup
had no right to use the trademark in Russia.

::  Federation Council Chairman Sergei Mironov is on a trip in the
Far East. This morning he was in Blagoveshchensk, meeting with
the Governor and deputies of the Amur Oblast. They discussed
regional development and economic ties with China.

::  Thirteen candidates have expressed their intention to participate
in the presidential elections in the Republic of Chechnya. The
registration period will continue through August 22. The voting is
scheduled for October 5.

::  The Ministry of Defense is preparing to switch the submarine
service to contract recruiting.

::  A new submarine is now operational in Severodvinsk.

::  Firefighters, search-and-rescue workers and airport conducted
training exercises security at the Zhukovsky Airport, simulating the
crash of two airplanes.

::  Fire Fighting services conducted safety inspections in schools
throughout Russia.

::  The Head of the Mozdok Military Hospital has been accused of
criminal negligence and noncompliance with orders. Fifty people
died and over 60 were injured in the August 1 terrorist act at the
hospital.

::  The residents of two apartment houses on Novoperedelkinskaya
Street in Moscow were evacuated at about 3:00am after an
anonymous call to the police office warning about bombs in the
buildings. No explosives were found.

::  Russia will demand the extradition of former KGB general, Oleg
Kalugin, from the United States.

::  A group of Polish mountain climbers was rescued from Mount
Elbrus.

::  19 Czech mountain climbers from the Klyuchevsky Volcano on
the Kamchatka were brought to a nearby settlement. One of them
died after being injured by a falling rock. The regional
Prosecutor’s Office plans to initiate a criminal case against the
travel company that sent them there without ensuring their safety.

::  Yevgeny Markov, the Russian citizen who was injured in the
recent terrorist act in Indonesia will return home in the near future.

::  Russian scientists are starting a major project to study the
ecological conditions of Siberian rivers.

::  Police officers in Macedonia are looking for the people who
attacked Russian soccer fans in Skopje.

::  In North Ossetia, the draft of a monument to the victims of the
Kolka Glacier has been approved.

::  President of Azarbaijan Heidar Aliev arrived at an American
hospital last night. His condition is described as stable.
