Russia may decide on ratification of Kyoto Protocol
in Sept.
MOSCOW, Aug. 4 (Kyodo) - Russia may make a final decision on ratifying the Kyodo Protocol on curbing global warming in September, which could lead to it entering into effect as early as the beginning of 2004, Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Khristenko indicated Monday.
''A most decisive moment will come in the fall'' on whether to ratify the protocol, Khristenko said in an interview with Kyodo News President Toyohiko Yamanouchi.
Khristenko did not specify exactly when the decision will be made. Analysts believe Russia, which has been pressured by Japan and Europe to ratify the pact, will decide in September.
The protocol, adopted in Kyoto, would enter into force 90 days after Russian ratification under the agreed implementation requirements for the number of countries ratifying it.
