[No dateline, as received] "The incumbent president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, is the author of the TVS channel's tragic fate," Valeriya Novodvorskaya, leader of the Democratic Union of Russia, has told Ekho Moskvy radio.

"Mishaps with independent media started to happen only when he came to power after a long [Boris] Yeltsin era of freedom of speech. The fate of NTV, TV-6, TVS [TV channels] and of [TVS editor-in-chief Yevgeniy] Kiselev's team, the fate of glasnost and freedom of speech was determined when men in black took NTV by assault. The rest was just a protracted agony," Novodvorskaya said.

"The fact that the channel was destroyed without last rendezvous, without a confession, speaks of the deepest fear of the authorities. On the other hand, it shows that there is a dictatorship in this country, despite its democratic camouflage," she added.
