US Promises to Play Substantial Role in Deciding Georgian-Abkhazia Conflict

TBILISI, June 16. The US promises to play a substantial and positive role in deciding the Georgian-Abkhazia conflict, according to Georgian Parliament Chairman Nino Burdzhanadze who recently returned from an official visit to the US on June 15, and did not clarify how exactly the US planned to participate in settling the Abkhazia problem.

According to Rosbalt , Burdzhanadze said that he met with Congressmen and Senators, with Secretary of State Colin Powell and also with leaders of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. The general tone of the meetings gives hope that the IMF and WB in spite of their dissatisfaction with the Georgian government will not stop discontinuing their credits.

Both financial institutions have been looking over the question of discontinuing financial aid to Georgia. Moreover, the IMF is refusing to petition the Paris Club about the restructuring of Georgia's external debts, which would threaten it with default.
