- The leaders of the G-8 nations held a working summit in Avian before
breaking up for bilateral meetings. They discussed the effect of the falling
dollar on the economy of other nations. At the meting, Russian President
Vladimir Putin held the most honorable seat, to the right of Chairman Jacques
Chirac.
- The first meeting of the State Council of the Republic of Chechnya, which
will include the administration heads from all regions of the republic, will be
held on June 10th. Amnesty to members of band formations who did not commit
serious crimes will be at the top of the agenda.
- President of Ingushetia Marat Zyazikov dismissed his government. In an
interview with ITAR-TASS, he explained the he did not find the government’s
work to be bad in the conventional sense, but simply felt that it was necessary
to “fundamentally change the work, including economic reform, investment
policy and other issues.”
- Russian Minister of Education Vladimir Filippov reported on the first
results of the Universal State Exam and shared his ideas about the fight against
corruption in universities.
- Final exams begin throughout the Russian regions.
- Russia and France accepted a joint declaration on the protection of the
indigenous peoples of the planet, dedicated to the arctic region.
- A new form for tax payments has been introduced in Russia, effective June
1. It will simplify the work of the tax services and decrease submission of
imprecise data.
- The salaries of doctors who treat patients suspected to have severe acute
respiratory syndrome may be raised. There have been 30 suspected cases of SARS
in Russia.
- Rappani Khalilov, the organizer of the May 9, 2002 terrorist act in
Kaspiisk has been killed.
- The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs complied with the decision of the
Supreme Court to allow Russian citizens to take passport photographs with
headdresses.
- Sailors in the Far East are beginning the fight against low pay and
difficult work conditions.
- The 201st motorized artillery division is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
- Toxic substance leaked from a railroad container in the Novosibirsk Oblast
city of Chulym. Children were evacuated from kindergartens. The state of
emergency was lifted in the evening.
- A nine-story apartment house collapsed in the city of Kolomna, in the
suburbs of Moscow. According to the preliminary investigation, a household gas
explosion was at fault. Emergency Ministry workers are rescuing people who were
not evacuated from under the ruins. One person has been hospitalized, two are
still missing.
- Italian tenor Lucciano Pavarotti arrived in Moscow for a concert. A few
days ago he participated in a concert dedicated to the 300th anniversary of St.
Peterburg.
- The Mars-Express scientific space vehicle has been launched towards Mars.
- Russia’s national soccer team is preparing for a qualifying match against
the Swiss team, to be held in Basel.
- Renowned Russian actor and director Yevgenii Matveev passed away on Sunday.
President Putin has expressed his condolences to Matveev’s friends and family.
- A monument to a dog that waited for its owner for 8 years has been
dedicated in Togliatti. The dog lived on the side of the road, where its owner
had died in a car crash.
