Russian investment abroad exceeds foreign investment in Russia

MOSCOW. Feb 18 (Interfax) - The volume of Russian investment abroad continues to exceed that of foreign investment in Russia, the State Statistics Committee reported Tuesday. Russia invested $19.89 billion in 2002, up 18.1%, compared with foreign investment in Russia of $19.78 billion. Russian investment abroad is usually short-term and largely of a speculative nature. Thus, Russian capital does not stay abroad for long, but returns to Russia after a short period. Just $4.097 billion in Russian capital had accumulated abroad at the end of 2002, compared with accumulated foreign investment in Russia of $42.9 billion.
