Russian ministry registers 47 political parties
ITAR-TASS
Moscow, 10 December: The Russian Justice Ministry has registered 47 political parties under the law "On political parties" the State Duma adopted in July 2001, Deputy Justice Minister Yevgeniy Sidorenko said on Tuesday [10 December].
Of that number, only 25 parties have been transformed from the previous public and political associations, while the rest have been formed anew, Sidorenko said.
He admitted that only 20 parties have been able to confirm registration of their branches in more than a half of Russia's constituent territories so far. In the meantime, the law requires that a party aspiring for seats in the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, have regional branches in more than a half of regions and territories...
The Justice Ministry turned down applications from 13 parties, and only five of them managed to eliminate flaws in the documents and get registration at the second try.
Aleksandr Veshnyakov, chairman of Russia's central electoral board, says Russia may have 30 political parties by next September when the official election race begins, but only five of them may have realistic claims for seats in the Duma.
