Russians differ on role of Constitution in their life, poll shows

MOSCOW. Dec 11 (Interfax) - A poll of 1,600 Russians shows an estimated 43% believe the current Constitution guarantees citizens' rights and liberties and helps maintain order in the country. The poll was conducted by the All-Russia Center for Public Opinion Research in late ctober.

Forty-one percent of respondents believe the Constitution "does not play any important role in the country's life, because few people care about it."

Seven percent of respondents believe the 1993 Constitution was used by then-president Boris Yeltsin to control the Duma.

Nine percent of Russians surveyed were undecided on what they think on this matter.

Constitution Day will be celebrated in Russia on Thursday, December 12.
