ONLY 15,000 SCIENTISTS FROM RUSSIA WERE ABLE TO FIND JOBS IN THEIR SPECIALITY ABROAD

MOSCOW, DECEMBER 5, 2002. /From RIA Novosti correspondent Eduard Puzyrev./ Of the 500,000 Russian scientists and engineers who left for permanent work abroad, only about 15,000 were able to find jobs in their particular special lines, said Alexander Shcheulin, first Deputy Director for Science of the Institute of Stable Development and Innovations in Dubna, a town in the Moscow region. He is the secretary responsible for the organization and preparation of the international conference "Russia-West Intellectual Bridge. Problems and Prospects" which will be held in Dubna on December 24-27.

Alexander Shcheulin said that among those invited to the conference are our fellow-compatriots who have managed to "gain a foothold" in the West, have become heads of laboratories and even of scientific schools there. "We have already organized for them in the Internet a virtual discussion of the problems that are to be raised at the conference," he said.

"About 700 scientists have responded," noted Shcheulin. "As the opening of the conference draws closer, their mood is changing from distrust that Russia is interested in their work to the desire to take part in the forum," he pointed out.

The conference will be held in two stages. At the first stage its participants will discuss problems of law, economy, security and psychology, and at the second stage - the participation of foreign scientists and their Russian colleagues in joint projects, said the deputy director of the institute.
