Suspects in the murder of deputy Starovoitova face charges

ST. PETERSBURG. Nov 6 (Interfax-Northwest) - A court has brought charges against six people detained on suspicion of involvement in the murder of State Duma Deputy Galina Starovoitova.

Mikhail Milushkin, deputy head of the Federal Security Service (FSB) department, told journalists on Wednesday that the decision was prompted after a criminal group was investigated.

Milushkin said in addition to criminal activities, the members of this group also ran a legal business. However, he refused to elaborate on the nature of their business or possible motives behind the murder.

Milushkin would also not say whether the case will go to court. He noted that the term of preliminary detention is set at 1.5 years. Therefore, "the investigation should be finished earlier."

Starovoitova was killed at the entrance of the apartment building where she lived on November 20, 1998 prior to the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly elections.
