Duma official comments on recent terrorist act in Moscow theater

Moscow, Russia, Nov 05, 2002 (RosBusinessConsulting via COMTEX) -- A public commission, which was created by the Union of Right Forces (SPS) to investigate the recent terrorist act at a Moscow theater, has submitted a part of the gathered materials on this case to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Boris Nadezhdin, deputy head of the SPS faction in the State Duma, told journalists today. He specified that the commission was investigating two questions: how it happened that the gunmen managed to seize a theater in Moscow and how adequate were the measures aimed at rendering assistance to released hostages. According to the deputy, "the work on the first part has not been completed yet, while the second part has been finished on the whole". Nadezhdin pointed out that the SPS expected that the President would respond to the submitted materials next week. However, as the President and SPS leader Boris Nemtsov agreed, the commission's preliminary conclusions would not be published until the President studied them. The deputy stressed that "there were many defects in the operation on taking hostages to hospitals". At the same time, he pointed out that "doctors were acting professionally and they did everything they could; on the other hand they were not informed as to what kind of assistance should be rendered". Nadezhnin was quoted as saying that the commission's investigation was based on a great deal of evidence from witnesses, video recordings submitted by individuals and mass media sources and expert conclusions. This public commission was created in the first days after the theater was stormed by special forces.
