Monday, November 4, 2002

- The number of the victims on the terrorist act at the Dubrovka theater has grown to 120. 149 people, including 4 children, remain in Moscow hospitals. Six of them are in critical condition.

- The Russian Prosecutor's office has refuted reports that there are still former hostages who have not been identified.

- Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Aleksii II is still in the hospital, but his condition has improved and he has been transferred out of the intensive-therapy ward.

- The restoration of the Ostankono television tower will be completed in 2003. Tomorrow will the 35 years since the day the tower was officially excepted for exploitation.

- A joint meeting of the governmental commission for the economic restoration of Chechnya and the operative headquarters of the counter-terrorist operation was held in Ingushetia.

- Five Chechen fighters who were captured by Georgian authorities will be detained for 3 more months. Russia is demanding the extradition of these and three other fighters.

- Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov is in Armenia on an official visit. He will spend two days in Yerevan discussing bilateral relations. He will also sign a number of agreements on conservation, use of natural resources and the transfer of actions from Armenian state enterprises for debts to Russia.

- The first of five bridges on the Tajik-Afghan border across the River Pyanj is now ready for use.

- A new domestically-produced train was demonstrated in Kolomna. This type of locomotive will replace Russia's stock by 2010.

- Two fighters suspected of participating in the Kaspiisk terrorist act (9 May 2000) have been detained in Daghestan.

- The reduction of federal forces in Chechnya has been halted.

- Federal forces have increased security measures in all major settlements.

- Renowned children's surgeon Leonid Roshal spoke with journalists about the actions of the Moscow Healthcare Committee during the tragic events at the theater on the Dubrovka.

- Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Minister for Taxes and Duties Gennady Bukaev to discuss the simplified registration system for legal entities in the framework of the program for the de-bureaucratization of the economy.

- President Putin chaired a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers to discuss the state budget, security measures and Prime Minister Kasyanov's trip to Armenia.

- The Press Ministry is compiling a document of recommendations for the media, which notes, in particular, that the media is supposed to inform the public and not to spread panic in the society.

- A cyclone left several dozen settlements on the Sakhalin without electricity.

- The International Sports Court of Arbitration is hearing the complaints of Russian skiers Larisa Lazutina and Olga Danilova, who were accused of doping in the Salt Lake City Winter Games.

- The search for fighters who shot down an Mi-8 military helicopter on Sunday continues in Chechnya.

- A large batch of confiscated weapons was melted down by police officers in Irkutsk. The metal will be used to make equipment for mining gold.

- The UN World Food Program will send 34,000 tons of foodstuffs (worth a total of $16 million) to Chechnya and Ingushetia. Deliveries will begin in January.

- Russian President Vladimir Putin chaired a meting on domestic and foreign politics. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, Presidential Administration Head Aleksandr Voloshin, Security Council Chairman Vladimir Rushailo, Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov and Federal Security Service Director Nikolai Patrushev.

- 151 victims of the Dubrovka theater terrorist act remain in Moscow's hospitals.

- Danish authorities have expressed reservations about the extradition of Akhmed Zakaev to Russia. Danish Justice Minister Lene Espersen demanded additional evidence of Zakaev's guilt.

- The People's Party of Russia organized a picket in front of the Danish Embassy in Moscow demanding the extradition of Zakaev.

- The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its approval of Albania's decision to refuse entry to Omar Djambiev, a supporter of Aslan Maskhadov who was heading to an International Congress of Radiacal Parties held in the Albanian capital of Tirana.

- Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told his British counterpart Jack Straw that Russia is in favor of the speedy return of UN inspectors to Iraq.

- Russia opened a new Embassy complex in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The mission is headed by Maksim Peshkov, a great grandson of the famous Russian writer Maksim Gorky.

- Chechen authorities are rushing to finish building new residences for migrants before the winter frosts set in.

- Day of the Draftee was celebrated in Moscow.

- A major action of the Youth Unity organization took place in Kaliningrad. Several thousand young Kaliningrad residents signed a petition asking the European Union to allow visa-free travel between the Kaliningrad Oblast and the rest of the Russian Federation.

- A group of Russian experts is heading to the US to inspect poultry suppliers.

- 65 years ago today, ruby stars were lit above the towers of the Kremlin. Each star weighs about 1 ton. They are always lit -- even in the daytime.

- Russia's Marat Safin won a tennis match against World Champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia.

- An Mi-8 Military helicopter was shot down near Khankala; 3 pilots and 6 soldiers who were onboard the plane died. Two fighters have been killed in the search-and-surveillance operation in the region from which the shoulder-launched missile was fired.

- 149 victims of the Dubrovka theater terrorist act -- including 4 children and 7 foreign citizens -- remain in Moscow's hospitals; 6 adults are still in critical condition.

- Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev presented the "Men Who Change the World" awards in Vienna.

- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov declared that the reduction of federal forces in Chechnya will be halted and large-scale, rigorous, but point-specific operations will begin in all regions of Chechnya.

- The major fire that broke out at the Transsibneft reservoir in Omsk has been localized. Two workers died in the fire and two others were seriously injured.

- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov is going to the Far East for a working visit.

- Akhmed Zakaev has asked Danish authorities for political asylum. The consideration of the question can take up to 6 months.
