Maverick Russian MP calls for joint action in fighting
Islamic extremism
ITAR-TASS
Washington, 2 November: Russia and the USA must pool their efforts in a bid to counteract extremism in the Arab world, since both countries have equal portions of responsibility for it, Vladimir Zhirinovskiy, a member of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, told a meeting at the National Press Club here.
The former USSR and the USA split the Arab world into spheres of influence during the Cold War era and supplied weapons and technology to different groups of those countries, Zhirinovskiy said, adding that many of those defence technologies had turned up in the hands of Islamic fundamentalists.
"The international community could have stamped out Islamic terrorism 20 or so years ago, but unfortunately the standoff between the USSR and the USA bred the most atrocious form of revolution - Islamic terror," Zhirinovskiy said.
Russia has been struggling against that terror for the past 10 years, but Western countries display a misunderstanding of our efforts to do this at times, he said.
Zhirinovskiy is visiting the USA at the invitation of the American Programme Bureau, a private corporation that organizes lectures by overseas politicians and public figures in the USA.
