Russian Education Ministry has no complaints against
Peace Corps
MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax) - The Russian Education Ministry has no claims against the Peace Corps' activity in Russia, Head of the Ministry's International Cooperation Department Nikolai Dmitriyev told Interfax on Tuesday.
He said, however, that since the Peace Corps began working in Russia, his department has received numerous complaints against this organization from Russian regions. "The authors of the complaints argued that representatives of the Peace Corps who gave English language lessons to secondary school students had no teaching experience and spoke very little Russian or did not speak Russian at all," Dmitriyev said.
He said there are no strict requirements to foreign teachers in Russia, but noted that "a person who goes to work to a foreign country is expected to haunication skills." "Moreover, not all native speakers are good teachers," said Dmitriyev.
He said that the Russian Education Ministry did not ask the Foreign Ministry not to prolong visas for volunteers from the Peace Corps. "We are in charge of drawing up applications for visas, and we have done our job," he said.
On Tuesday, Russian newspapers reported that half of the Peace Corps volunteers have not had their Russian visas prolonged.
