June 26 is the International Day of the Fight Against Narcotics. Never
before has illegal drug use been such a big problem for Russia. According to
independent experts, almost 3 million Russians use narcotics. The profit made by
drug dealers is greater than the budget of all of the power organs in the
Russian Federation. |

In St. Petersburg, representatives of Russian airlines attended the
demonstration of the new TU-334 airliner. |

The wives of several Belarusian opposition politicians who disappeared over
the past few years sent a letter to the Russian government asking for help
uncovering the fate of their husbands. |

|
Chairman of the Commerce and Industry Chamber Yevgeny Primakov met with
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to discuss relations between the two
countries. |

|
State Duma deputies accepted the law on the sale of agricultural land in
the third reading and four drafts on railroad reform in the first reading. |

|
The Duma Council postponed the review of the energy reform laws until the
fall session. |

Today's meeting of the Federation Council began with a minute of silence
for the victims of the flooding in Russia's southern regions: 76 people have
died and 52,000 houses have been damaged -- a tenth of these completely
destroyed. The preliminary damage assessment stands at 13 billion rubles. State
Duma deputies have decided to send the salaries they would have earned while on
the upcoming Summer Recess to the victims of the flooding. |

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov announced that import taxes on
foreign automobiles will not be increased until Russian manufacturers begin to
produce cars that can compete with Western makes. |

The six interior ministry officers accused of murdering Moskovsky
Komsomolets journalist Dmitry Kholodov have been acquitted. They plan on seeking
compensation for material and moral damages. |

|
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov announced that Russia will create a
new nuclear-missile system for submarines. |
|
|
The G-8 summit in Canada will open in several hours. |
|
|
The Moscow City Court has convicted former KGB General Oleg Kalugin
(currently residing in the US) in absentia to 15 years imprisonment. He has also
been stripped of his military rank and of all state honors.
