Subject: Correction to Interfax: Russian scientists continue to leave
country. (Johnson's List #6319)
Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002
The report that from 500,000 to 800,000 Russian scientists have emigrated is erroneous and probably too large by an order of magnitude. In fact, according to Russian Government statistics, there were about 800,000 scientific researchers in Russia as a whole before the breakup of the Soviet Union, and today there are 426,000. Official Russian sources estimate that the number of scientists who emigrated (those who departed and do not expect to return) during the period 1991-2001 was 20,600, and that approximately 80,000 to 100,000 left for temporary contract work during the same period.
Undoubtedly there was simply a factual error in this report, but I bring this to your attention because these erroneous figures have already been reported in other media and could cause some confusion.
