Putin's wife opposes reform of Russian spelling rules

MOSCOW. June 24 (Interfax) - At "a business breakfast" in Rossiyskaya Gazeta's editorial office on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin's wife Lyudmila said that she opposes the proposed reform of Russian spelling rules.

"With the economy in bad need of patching up, with teachers being paid meager wages and pensions only now being paid regularly, such a reform is not needed. Let us not waste money on a reform that numerous linguistic authorities question. It will cost money to write and print new textbooks and dictionaries and retrain teachers," she said. Mrs. Putin is a professional philologist.
