"It Is A Bit More Than the Site of a Specific
Person - It Is the Kremlin Site … the Center of Power": Putin on New
Presidential Website
The creation of its English language version, however, must not be work
"for export"
The next logical stage in the development of the new incarnation of the presidential site should be the creation of its English language version.
However, this must not be work "for export." Vladimir Putin made an announcement to this effect on Thursday, June 20, at a meeting with the creators of the site in the Kremlin. It will simply be necessary to translate into English all that has already been posted on the site, the head of state explained.
Moreover, Putin remarked, the new site will enable the authorities to explain to the citizens of Russia what the authorities have in mind when taking this or that step. This, according to Putin, is important, since he himself has encountered an incorrect interpretation of what he said.
The president believes that the new site will somewhat ease the burden of the Kremlin's "letters" department that is working quite intensively. The department receives a great number of requests, demands, and proposals, RIA Novosti reports.
Vladimir Putin thanked not only the winners but all the participants in the contest to create the presidential site as well. The president also thanked the contest's jury panel for the attention it gave to the site. "This is a bit more than the site of a specific person. It is the Kremlin's site, and the Kremlin is not only an architectural ensemble - it is the center of power, and this is something bigger - it is the spiritual center of the country," the president pointed out.
Putin is of the opinion that the site has changed for the better, but specialists can always find something not quite right, and that it is necessary to introduce changes that will make the site better. "Let's make it better," declared Vladimir Putin. The president expressed the hope that interest in the site would grow if the spirit of cooperation remained between the presidential staff and the developers of the president's Internet site.
The president also noted that on the whole, the campaign to computerize rural schools last year went off quite well. He pointed out that the program for computerizing urban schools was to be completed this year. He also explained that next year there were plans to use modern technologies - including outer space - to create a unified educational system in the country.
The Russian president's site consists of five sections: President, Institutions, Priorities, Kremlin and Events. The first section is devoted to the president as an elected official. "Institutions" offers information about the government, Russia's Security Council, the State Council, as well as various ministries and agencies. "Priorities" deals with the strategy of developing the state, and includes the main legislative initiatives of the president. "Kremlin" offers reference material about the place of residence of the head of the Russian state, his transportation facilities, and matters of protocol concerning the president. The "Events" section reports on the latest information concerning the president's activities.
One of the members of the jury panel, Artemy Lebedev, told journalists that the president's request to create an English language version of the site would be carried out. According to Lebedev, this is technically not complicated, and that work on it would be completed within the next two-three months. Two or three persons will be servicing the site.
