Russia's Communists adopt election strategy for
2003-2004
ITAR-TASS
Moscow, 22 June: The 9th plenum of the Russian Communist Party has approved its election strategy for the upcoming parliamentary and presidential polls. According to the strategy, the party will run "together with its allies from the People's Patriotic Union and other left-wing political movements", Communist Party leader Gennadiy Zyuganov told journalists today.
His first deputy Valentin Kuptsov said that although a political decision had been adopted, it was too early to say what names election associations would have because the law on elections to the State Duma had not been adopted yet.
The plenum also adopted a number of documents regarding preparations for local and federal elections. For example, the party will have to create election staffs within two months. The delegates also discussed the upcoming referendum on private land ownership. "We will collect two million signatures", he said.
Commenting on Ivanovo Region governor Vladimir Tikhonov's proposal that the Left should nominate several candidates for president and chose the most popular one among them through rating voting, Zyuganov said, "I have already invited all those wishing to run to sign up, but I don't see any queue".
Kuptsov told journalists that they should not have waited for a sensation at the plenum. "Many expected further division in the party and reshuffle, but the plenum showed serious unity", he said. Having noted that the discussion was harsh and many disputable proposals were put forth, all documents were adopted by the absolute majority of votes.
