Russian scientists continue to leave country

MOSCOW. June 20 (Interfax) - From 500,000 to 800,000 scientists have left Russia over the past 10 years, Chairman of the Russian Academy of Sciences' trade unions Viktor Kalinushkin told a press conference in Moscow on Thursday.

"From 500,000 to 800,000 Russian scientists have left on long-term missions abroad in the past 10 years. Almost none of them have returned," Kalinushkin said.

"Russian scientists abroad earn on average from $3,000 to $7,000 a month, while in Russia their average salary is under 3,000 rubles [about $95]."

"At the moment, two age groups of scientists exist in Russia - young people under 28-30 years old and the senior generation - around 50 years old. A larger part of young people leave to work abroad," he said.

According to the Academy of Scientists, Russian scholars mainly leave for Japan, the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, France, and Germany.
