Government Revamps Its Internet Site
The new interactive mode will enable individuals to send electronic messages to
the government and establish a dialogue with its members
Visitors to the Russian government's official Internet site will be treated to a new version today. The Government Information Department presented it to journalists two days ago.
It's based on the design that has been in effect since December 28, 1999. On that date, the Government Information Department began supplying electronic information to the public and the media, discontinuing nearly all hardcopy traffic.
The site's new version now features Government Staff, Government-Related Agencies, and Government Plans and Programs. Another new feature is an index arranged in alphabetical order.
News banners will carry official events and government resolutions. A banner featuring the work of ministries and other government departments is to be introduced in the near future.
The interactive mode complete with feedback mechanisms ensuring continuous contact between the government and the public is the most prominent innovation. It will enable individuals to send electronic messages to the government and establish a dialogue with its members.
The government will consider incoming electronic messages within the same timeframe that applies to traditional messages written on paper. When dialogue mode is introduced, members of the government will be able to hold Internet conferences. When the mechanism has been tested and improved, Russians will be able to take part in open Internet debates on pressing issues, involving public figures and experts.
The new government site is one result of the agreements reached at Moscow's Civic Forum in November 2001. At that time, Russia's president and prime minister supported proposals for the establishment of effective feedback between government and society.
Internet technologies used by the government are developed under the federal program Electronic Russia.
