Russian liberal party praises Putin's foreign policy
Interfax

Moscow, 15 June: The Yabloko party says it backs President Putin's foreign policy.

"We back orientation towards inclusion into the coalition of developed democratic countries. However, we should not melt into this coalition and fulfil somebody's orders," Vladimir Lukin, deputy chairman of Yabloko, said while speaking on Russia's foreign policy at the party meeting today.

Lukin said Yabloko should back the signing of the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reductions, which was signed in Moscow in May. However, he said this document is "not something decisive" or "breakthrough". "It is the continuation of the process that began long ago," he said. The position of Russia, which wants the reduced nuclear arsenals to be destroyed, good because "the more nuclear weapons are stored, the higher the possibility that they can be used by terrorists", he said.

Speaking about the Kaliningrad region issue, Lukin said Putin "was right in taking a tough stance on this matter". At the same time, Lukin said Russia should not "take so tough a stance" on this issue "as to make the EU its enemy".
