Russian liberal leader officially launches campaign for 2003 elections
ITAR-TASS

Moscow, 15 June: The Yabloko party has begun preparations for the 2003 parliamentary elections.

Yabloko leader Grigoriy Yavlinskiy on Saturday [15 June] officially announced the commencement of the election campaign and urged his supporters to join forces in order to work out the election programme.

Yavlinskiy said his party is ready to assume responsibility for solving problems in Russia because "the country is slowly getting drawn into a crisis".

Despite fairly good economic performance, the economy is veering towards the fuel and energy sector to the detriment of high-tech industries, he said.

The party leadership expressed its most active support for the country's foreign policy and adopted a special resolution. It welcomed the policy that secured Russia's integration into the coalition of developed democratic countries and described it as "correct and useful".

At the same time, this foreign policy breakthrough has so far not been tied in with the internal policy, Yavlinskiy said.
