Russian Communist Party calls for ouster of country's leadership

MOSCOW. May 27 (Interfax) - The Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party has sharply criticized the country's leadership and virtually spoken for its ouster.

A statement adopted by a full meeting of the Central Committee on Saturday says that Russia's security cannot be guaranteed "without removing the current ruling group from power."

It believes that the country's defense capability is being purposefully undermined and that "the policy of the Putin-Kasyanov regime is stripping it [Russia] of the means to keep up the combat capability of the armed forces, even at a minimal level." "The class nature of the Putin-Kasyanov regime is quite evident," the statement says. It serves "a tiny group of oligarchs who have seized the national wealth," it claims.

The statement sharply criticizes the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reductions signed by the presidents of Russia and the United States in Moscow on Friday. In the opinion of the party leadership, the document "consolidates the program of Russia's unilateral nuclear disarmament." It claims that "the 1,500 warheads Russia will be allowed to keep is just the amount that the U.S. missile defense system will be capable of intercepting," while the United States will be rapidly building up its military might [the treaty speaks of a ceiling of strategic nuclear warheads at 1,700-2,200 units].

"The special services of the United States and their allies freely enter all parts of our country and try to bring agents of their influence into Russia's governing circles. Pro-American forces are openly trying to establish control over the Foreign Ministry, army and security forces," the statement says.

In the opinion of the Central Committee, "the formation of the Russia-NATO council is a deception aimed at stripping this country of its will to resist the new expansion of the North Atlantic alliance to the East." The party leadership notes that the Kremlin made crucial decisions on military strategic matters without consulting Belarus, which "contradicts the letter and sprit of the treaty of the union state."

The statement draws the conclusion that President Vladimir Putin has lost his willpower as a statesman and is incapable of defending Russia's interests.
