DANCE
From Russia with soul

It is safe to say that no dance company in recent years has made an impact on American audiences to compare with the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg. The subject of the troupe's narratives, as might be expected from Boris Eifman, is usually Russian and very soulful. The dancing constantly shatters classical protocol with emotional attacks that border on hysteria. The musical accompaniment plunders the works of any number of great composers. Yet the theatrical impact is undeniable, unforgettable and downright cult-making. Eifman's third visit to the area features the local premiere of his 1995 version of "The Brothers Karamazov"; Dostoyevsky will survive -- barely. .
