Washington ProFile

The Center for Defense Information announces Washington ProFile, International News and Analysis Agency, an independent, Washington-based organization committed to providing reliable information in Russian about American politics, business and culture. Dr. Nikolai Zlobin brought this project to CDI in September 2001, and continues as director and editor-in-chief.

The goal of Washington ProFile is to provide unbiased news and analyses based on government and non-government sources about America, including how Americans perceive Russia and the Former Soviet Union. The project is committed to cultivating a free and open information exchange between the United States, Russia and former Soviet Union and is not intended to usurp either the work of Russian journalists or authorities. Rather, Washington ProFile endeavors to support them by providing timely, reliable information to Russians and Russian-speaking people, and to foster involvement by Russia and other countries in the democratic international community. In the short time since its inception, Washington ProFile has earned a reputation as a reliable source of independent, no-cost information.

Washington ProFile provides information via electronic mail and Internet free to interested organizations and individuals. In particular, Washington ProFile seeks to cooperate with media outlets, especially in the FSU. Material is provided for reprint or broadcast, with special emphasis on regional and local media otherwise lacking access to sources of information. The project is intended as a valuable resource, able to assist local organizations in distributing well-rounded news, representing a range of sources that might not otherwise be available.

Washington ProFile is sent to most of media in Russia, FSU and others countries with Russian-speaking populations, as well as to educational institutions, NGOs, politicians, public activists, and independent journalists, among others. Some 25,000 subscribers use Washington ProFile representing all 89 regions of Russia and more than 100 countries around the globe. Through reprints and broadcasts, Washington ProFile reaches a far greater audience. Materials from Washington ProFile are translated into other languages including Ukrainian, Byelorussian, Uzbek and English.

Each issue contains materials in Russian, edited and available at no cost for reprint in Russian media. Materials are also posted on a public web site (www.washprofile.org), where back issues are archived, goals of the project are described and forums for discussion are made available.

The staff of Washington ProFile identifies issues of significant political and social interest to readers in Russia and the former Soviet Union, and gathers related news. While the project produces original news, additional material offered by Washington ProFile derives from a range of sources in the United States including: government agencies such as the State Department, White House, Immigration and Naturalization Service and others; legal proceedings; and NGOs, to name just a few. Washington ProFile interviews leading experts to discuss pressing issues and their perspectives; transcripts, photographs are available. Video will soon be added for download.
