Putin exceeds expectations - Gorbachev
Interfax

Moscow, 24 November: Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has said he believes that President Vladimir Putin has achieved significant success since taking office in Russia.

"With all its successes and flaws, his activity is oriented towards national interests, the interests of all Russians, and I'd say Putin has done even more than I expected," Gorbachev said, speaking at the constituent assembly of the United Social Democratic Party in Moscow on Saturday [24 November].

At the same time, support for the president by Social Democrats "is not unreserved, unprincipled or unconditional", Gorbachev said. "We offer criticism when necessary," he said.

Talking about Russia's development, it is important to bear in mind "the global context", as "globalization has become dominant in the world's development", the former president said.
