Duma sees attack on fighters for justice as tragic trait of modern Russia

MOSCOW. April 1 (Interfax) - The attack on the right activist, leader of the Movement for Human Rights Lev Ponomaryov was a "cynical escapade," said Vice Chairman of the State Duma Security Committee Gennady Gudkov of the Fair Russia faction.

"The attack on Lev Ponomaryov is a cynical escapade and an instance of street lynching. The inability to conduct political discussions leads to the use of "might is right" as a centuries-old method of settling arguments," Gudkov told the press on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the struggle for justice in Russia often ends by violence, he said. "This is a tragic trait of the times," he added.

Gudkov said that the names of activists with a strong civil position, lawyers, journalists and rights activists - Markelov, Politkovskaya, Shchekochikhin, Baburov and many other activists, appear each year on murder statistics reports.

"In the current crucial period for Russia, absolutely all citizens find themselves in the risk zone, especially those who fight against corruption and expose it. Unfortunately, the state cannot guarantee their security," Gudkov said. Ponomaryov was severely beaten up by three unidentified attackers near his home in Moscow on Tuesday evening. Rights activists link the attack to Ponomaryov's work.
