British Prime Minister Might Attend Russian President's
Inauguration If Invited
MOSCOW. April 16 (Interfax) - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has not yet
received an invitation to attend the inauguration of President-elect Dmitry
Medvedev.
Brown has not been invited yet, British Ambassador Anthony Brenton said in
Moscow on Wednesday.
As far as we know, the inauguration will not require the attendance of
country leaders, except those of CIS member-countries, he said.
But if we receive such an invitation, the prime minister will carefully
consider whether to travel to Russia for the inauguration, the British diplomat
said.
Over the past years, British-Russian relations have not been particularly
good, but there are positive things in bilateral economic relations, he said.
Regarding the situation surrounding TNK-BP, both the British and Russian
authorities are being very careful to distinguish political from economic
issues, he said.
We closely followed the events around TNK-BP, Brenton said, adding that
according to company executives, the current problems are the result of internal
factors, rather than the fact that part of the company is British.
