Over 90% of women in Russia suffer from family violence

MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax) - Over 90% of Russian women face family violence, results of a study by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) show.

"According to the study, almost all women have faced family violence," Tatyana Zabelina, the project manager of the study, told a news conference in Moscow.

"The majority of polled people said that family violence is primarily physical and sexual violence, as well as economic and psychological," Zabelina said.

According to the study, 90.7% of women think that family violence is an acute problem, which they face almost every day, she said. "Over 14,000 women die from family violence every year: every 35 minutes husbands or partners cause death to women. Parents beat up about two million children annually. Fear of family violence drives out over 50,000 children from their homes, while about 7,000 [children] fall victim to sexual crimes," Zabelina said.

The study was carried out in four Russian cities: Moscow, Samara, Tula and Dubna, in July - December 2006 at the initiative of the UN Gender Theme Group with the support of the UNFPA.
