Ombudsman Lukin Against Hasty Recognition Of Abkhazia,
South Ossetia
MOSCOW. Aug 21 (Interfax) - Ombudsman in Russia Vladimir Lukin has said he
opposes the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by Russia.
"To what extent so we need it now? What will change? I cannot see any
coherent answer except that the bridges for further negotiations will be burnt,"
the ombudsman told Interfax on Thursday evening. Lukin said he believes Russia
should postpone it's recognition of the two republics.
"For example, a question will arise about Georgia's admission or
non-admission to NATO. It is a matter of pressure on us. We should have some
moves in store," Lukin, a former Russian ambassador to the United States,
explained.
"There is one principle in politics: never say never. Lots of problems may
await us in the future, so we should leave some options open," he said.
While on the whole agreeing that Russia must take steps to protect its
citizens in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and curb military attacks on those
republics, Lukin remarked, "All this is right but at the same time one ought to
use one's head".
