#1 - JRL 2008-155 - JRL Home
A comment from David Johnson:
Since I started JRL in 1996 I've always had in the back of my mind an image
of the ideal recipient of JRL. That is someone with the time, inclination, and
curiosity to read everything with an open mind, particularly on controversial
and complex issues, and striving for understanding even of things that one does
not agree with. This notion comes perhaps from my Quaker background that is
disinclined to divide the world into good guys and bad guys. I think this
approach is also soundly based on a realistic understanding of human nature.
Most people believe that what they think and say is what's right. And ignoring
that fact often leads to inaccurate analysis and error.
In the current conflict in Georgia I am pulled in many directions. I will
only offer one observation. The articulate partisans on this matter are capable
of presenting a compelling and persuasive case. And the righteousness of that
case is held with complete sincerity. I know that is hard for some to believe
but it is absolutely true. And if one has made up one's mind about who is right
everything can be interpreted to fit with one's preconception. The rush to
judgement and to sustain the validity of one's judgement is overwhelming. That
is sadly exactly where we are today. And for sometime to come. Being situated in
Washington I have a certain angle on the problem but it exists everywhere.
Certainly in Russia and Georgia.
