An OPEC for Natural Gas?
Thursday, April 5, 2007
9:00AM-10:30AM
in Conference Room A (4th Floor) at
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
1201 Connecticut Ave NW
Washington DC
[entrance on Rhode Island Ave NW, next to St. Matthew's Cathedral]

The potential for the creation of a global natural gas cartel, along the lines of the oil industry's Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and involving gas-exporting countries such as Russia, Algeria, Iran, Qatar and Venezuela, has been debated by media in Russia and around the world. On the eve of an April 9 meeting in Qatar--at which it is rumored such a group could be announced--two experts will discuss what such an organization might look like; who and/or what might be driving its creation; and the reasons such a group may--or may not--be created.

Nikos Tsafos is an analyst for PFC Energy's Gas Group, specializing in the global geopolitics of natural gas, with a particular emphasis on European gas markets, and regional markets in the Middle East and Latin America. Tsafos' primary responsibilities include writing strategic profiles for major IOCs and NOCs in the Gas Competition Service (GCS) and on the major trends and themes concerning the global gas industry. Roman Kupchinsky was the president of Prolog Research and Publishing Corporation in New York prior to joining RFE/RL, where he was director of the Ukrainian Service for ten years before taking on his current role as regional analyst for RFE/RL Online and editor of "RFE/RL Organized Crime and Terrorism Watch" in 2001.

Please RSVP by April 4 by email to < dc-response@rferl.org >, by telephone to Melody Jones at (202) 457-6949, or by fax to (202) 457-6992.
