Subject: A question about research in Moscow
I received this email from the US Embassy in Moscow. Do you know of any
researchers in Moscow who would look for correspondence written by Peter (Pedro,
Pierre) Kostromitinoff (Kostromitinov) in the Archive of Foreign Policy of the
Russian Empire?
Mr. Kostromitinoff was the consul for Russia in San Francisco, California and
worked for the Russian American Company during the 1850s and 1860s.

Dear Mr. Oertel,
Per Mr. Kenney’s request, we called the Archive of Foreign Policy of the
Russian Empire under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We related your interest
in locating correspondence written by Peter Kostromitinoff to Ms. Glushkova,
Head of the Archive. Ms. Glushkova told us that if you are unable to conduct the
research in person, you need to find a researcher on your own. If this
researcher is an American, he/she needs to have contacts with a Russian research
organization which, in its turn, needs to get permission for access to the
Archive. If this American researcher is not affiliated with a U.S. research
organization, the Embassy can submit access request to the Archive only if this
person is known to the U.S. Embassy representatives. Ms. Glushkova confirmed
that, unfortunately, the Archive has no system that would provide a researcher
to perform any cursory search.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
