In its just-released report on Russia's amended "Law on Noncommercial Organizations," the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom asserts that the law places "disturbing" restrictions on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and further circumscribes the role the government grants civil society in a country where democracy is under increasing threat. The researchers who drafted the report, Robert Blitt and Tad Stahnke, will discuss its findings and recommendations.
Robert C. Blitt is an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law in Knoxville. He is also Vice Chair of the American Bar Association's (ABA) Middle East Committee and Chair-Elect of the Association of American Law Schools' (AALS) Section on International Human Rights Law. From 2004-2006, Blitt served as International Law Specialist for the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.
Tad Stahnke joined the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom in February 2000 and currently serves as the Deputy Director for Policy. Prior to joining the Commission, Stahnke spent three years with Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, a law firm in New York City. From 1996-98, Stahnke helped lead a program on "Religion, Human Rights, and Religious Freedom" at Columbia University Law School, where for several years he taught a seminar on religious freedom and international human rights law.
