The American and Russian Publics on Nuclear Weapons and the Future of
Disarmament
Invitation to a Briefing and Release, Friday November 9
The Center for International and Security Studies (CISSM) at the University of Maryland and its Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) would like to invite you to a release and briefing for a new WorldPublicOpinion.org <http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/index.xml> poll of American and Russian attitudes toward recent cooperative nuclear risk reduction proposals.
At a time when major Cold War era--arms control agreements are at risk, there have also been a number of ambitious proposals for renewed efforts to reduce and even eliminate nuclear weapons to avoid a new era of nuclear proliferation and terrorism. These include legislation proposed by Senators Hagel and Obama, as well as the "Rejkyavik Revisited Plan" proposed by George Schultz, Henry Kissinger, William Perry and Sam Nunn.
Key aspects of these plans were explored in the poll, including:
--taking nuclear weapons off high alert,
--gaining international control of the production of nuclear fuel
--prohibiting the production of weapons-grade nuclear material
--establishing advanced methods of international verification; and
--staged deep reductions of nuclear weapons, including all nuclear powers,
leading to complete elimination
Polling was fielded in Russia by the Levada Center and in the United States by Knowledge Networks.
Poll findings will be presented by Steven Kull, director of PIPA
The implication of the findings will be discussed by John Steinbruner, director of CISSM, and Bruce Blair, director of the World Security Institute.
The briefing will take place on Friday, November 9, from 12:15 -2 pm in the Root Room at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 1779 Massachusetts Ave. Washington DC. Lunch will be served.
We hope you will be able to join us. Please RSVP to info@pipa.org or to Abe Medoff at 202-232-7500.
