EVENTS

Unless otherwise noted, Kennan Institute meetings are held in the Flom Auditorium on the 6th floor of the Woodrow Wilson Center. Please note that seating at all events is available on a first come, first served basis-no reservations required. Please call on the day of the event to confirm. Please bring an identification card with a photograph (e.g. driver's license, work i.d., or university i.d.) as part of the Wilson Center's security procedures.

KI and IREX Announce 2008 Regional Policy Symposium: Frozen Conflicts and Unrecognized States in Southeast Europe and Eurasia Deadline: December 3, 2007

The International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX)-in collaboration with the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (WWC)-will be hosting a research symposium to bring together junior and senior scholars and members of the policy community to examine and discuss timely topics related to the frozen conflicts and unrecognized states in Southeast Europe and Eurasia from multi-disciplinary approaches. Topics include: security and military cooperation; economic trends; environment and safety; human rights; cross-border ethnic issues; trade development; legal reform; and foreign relations. Research focus areas may include: Abkhazia; Kosovo; Nagorno-Karabakh; Republika Srpska; South Ossetia; and Transnistria.

Junior scholars will be chosen based on a national competition to present their current research on the region. Grants will be awarded to approximately 10 junior scholars. The Regional Symposium is scheduled to take place in mid-April 2008 in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and will involve two full days of reviews of current research projects, roundtable discussions, and the development of policy recommendations.

Staff News

The Kennan Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of William Eric Pomeranz as Deputy Director as of August 2007. Prior to joining the Kennan Institute, Will practiced international law at Reed Smith LLP in Washington, D.C. He previously worked as an attorney in the Moscow Office of Baker & McKenzie, and served as a program officer for Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus at the National Endowment for Democracy. He served as editor at the Kennan Institute during the early 1990s.

The Kennan Institute is also pleased to announce that Rachel Madenyika joined the Kennan Institute staff in June 2007. Rachel replaces Summer Brown as Program Specialist for finance. Summer, who is moving to Nigeria, left the Center in June. We thank her for her stellar performance at the Center over the past three years.

Rachel comes to the Center from WITNESS, a nonprofit human rights and media advocacy organization based in Brooklyn, New York. She previously worked at the International Center for Transitional Justice in New York, the Quaker United Nations Office in New York, as well as at European Union Mico-Projects in Zimbabwe, Intercolonias in Mexico, and Save the Children in Kentucky.

Margaret Paxson has announced that she will be leaving the Kennan Institute to pursue research opportunities in the region in December 2007. Margaret will continue with the Kennan Institute in part-time status for the next few months. We thank her for her dedicated service over the past five years and wish her well in her new endeavors.
