There Are Enough Legal Grounds To Prosecute Lugovoi -
Brenton
MOSCOW. Oct 6 (Interfax) - Andrei Lugovoi, whom the British prosecution
service, accuses of murdering Russian businessman Alexander Litvinenko should
not fear the British judicial system, British Ambassador to Russian Tony Brenton
said.
The ambassador said in a statement published by the Komsomolskaya Pravda
newspaper on Saturday that he invites Lugovoi to come to the United Kingdom and
that he will buy a ticket for Lugovoi himself, adding that an innocent person
should not fear a fair trial.
Litvinenko was killed in a horrible manner which constituted a threat of
radiological poisoning to hundreds of Europeans, the ambassador said. The
identity of a suspect in the case was established in a thorough investigation
held by the Crown Prosecution Service, he said. This is Lugovoi, Brenton said,
adding that the prosecution service demanded his extradition.
Both Russia and Britain are signatories of the European convention on
extradition, he said. The prosecution service provided Russian agencies with
full and uncontestable evidence sufficient enough to open a criminal case
against Lugovoi, Brenton said.
The case needs to be addressed at a fair and unbiased trial on the territory
of the country where the crime was committed, the ambassador said. Now the UK
waits for Russian authorities to scrutinize the case given to them, the British
diplomat said.
It is impossible that relations between the two great powers such as Russian
and the UK depend on cases similar to the Lugovoi case, he said. The two
countries have to find ways to cooperate on many important international
problems interaction on which could lead to a positive result, he said, adding
that British authorities are ready for this. Brenton also expressed hope that
Russian authorities are ready for this as well.
The British side has sought extradition of Lugovoi who is accused of murder
former officers of Russian special services Litvinenko. Russia refused to
extradite Lugovoi referring to the Russian Constitution. Lugovoi has stated many
times that he is innocent.
