Novaya Gazeta Hits the Internet in English
Novaya Gazeta is now available in English -- but only on the Internet.
The newspaper, known for its investigative reporting, started posting
translations of select articles on the web site en.novayagazeta.ru Thursday.
"We will not translate the whole paper because not every article interests
foreign readers," Novaya Gazeta's online editor, Sergei Asriyants, said Monday.
The web site is currently designed to contain six articles, and the selection
Monday included reports about last year's murder of Novaya Gazeta reporter Anna
Politkovskaya, titled "How Anya Was Killed," and the recent bombing of a train
heading from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
The site relies on one freelance translator, Asriyants said.
He said the project was still in its early stages, and there was no
information yet about how many readers had logged on to it.
Novaya Gazeta's Russian web site said it had 73,080 unique hits per week.
The newspaper has an official circulation of around 180,000 and is published
three times a week. Its print edition is also distributed in Israel and
Kazakhstan.
The paper also recently started selling a Russian-language weekly edition at
kiosks in Germany with a circulation of about 9,500. Asriyants would not comment
on whether the newspaper might start an English-language print edition.
The newspaper is 90 percent owned by billionaire State Duma Deputy Alexander
Lebedev, while the rest is owned by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
