Sochi Olympic Bid Success Mirrors Russia's Revival - Political Scientist

MOSCOW. July 5 (Interfax) - Sochi's choice as the host city for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games mirrors the growing international prestige of Russia, MGIMO professor and political scientist Andranik Mirganian told Interfax on Thursday.

"The choice of Sochi shows that this country is on the rise and its status as a serious economic and political force is being returned," he said. "Sport has never been isolated from the general condition and the economy of a country."

"The Olympic Games are always a chance to display athletic achievements and other successes," Mirganian said.

The 2008 Summer Games in Beijing are an illustration of that, Andranik said. "This is proof of the international recognition of China's growth and its leading position in the world economy and politics," he said.

The success of the Sochi Olympic bid is a very important moral factor, which will promote public unity, he said.
