Kennan Professor, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University, and former U.S. Ambassador to the USSR (1987-91); Wayne Merry, Senior Associate, American Foreign Policy Council, Washington, D.C., and former Chief Domestic Political Analyst, U.S. Embassy, Moscow, (1991-94); Richard Miles, Executive Director, Open World Leadership Center, Washington, D.C.; Chair, Kennan Institute Advisory Council; former U.S. Consul General, Leningrad (1988-91); and former U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, to Bulgaria, and to Azerbaijan

On December 25, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the USSR. The following day, the Supreme Soviet recognized the collapse of the Soviet Union and disbanded itself. It was an exciting time of great hope, but also concern over what would come next. Fifteen years later, this panel of experts and American diplomats who worked in the Soviet Union and Russia will relate their recollections of the time, and provide their perspectives on those events and why it was the Soviet Union collapsed.
