Ukraine can join NATO only through referendum - document

KYIV. Aug 3 (Interfax) - The National Unity Universal, an agreement between leading Ukrainian political forces regarding the key principles of the country's domestic and foreign policy, stipulates that Ukraine's accession to NATO should be decided through a referendum, Roman Zvarych of Our Ukraine told journalists on Thursday.

Asked whether the representatives of four parliamentary factions have agreed on the key provisions of the Universal, Zvarych said all the sensitive points that were in the original text "have been smoothed out."

The political forces have agreed with the president's strategic course. In particular, they found common ground regarding the country's unity, the property market, and the official status of the Ukrainian language, he said.
