Subject: St. Petersburg Times clarification
Dear Mr. Johnson,
As you ran our article on the appropriateness of holding the World Newspaper
Congress in Russia and Larry Kilman's response to it, I would be grateful if you
could run the clarification that we subsequently printed. For the record, I have
also included our initial response to Mr. Kilman's concerns.
Yours sincerely,
Tobin Auber
Editor, The St. Petersburg Times
>Dear Mr. Kilman,
>
>On behalf of The St. Petersburg Times I would like to sincerely apologise if
you felt that the story Martin Burlund wrote about the World Newspaper Congress,
published today, was misleading and that you were misquoted.
>
>The next edition of the newspaper is published on Tuesday, June 6, and a
clarification reflecting your views will be published then.
>
>Best regards

>PUBLISHED TUESDAY JUNE 6:
>Larry Kilman, director of communications for the World Association of
>Newspapers (WAN), who was quoted in the report "Journalists Shut Out of
>World Press Event" by Martin Burlund, published last Friday, would like
>to make it clear that "no foreign journalists have been prevented from
>attending the WAN events taking place" in Moscow this week.
>In an e-mail to The St. Petersburg Times, Kilman said he felt the
>report, which detailed how some foreign correspondents are denied visas
>to Russia, was "misleading" and "paraphrased the reasons... that the
>events were being held in Moscow."
>Kilman also wrote that he felt that the report "exaggerated what I said
>about the number of people who opposed coming to Russia - as the massive
>participation shows, most people have no objection to coming at all."
